Homeschooling Newbies Welcome!
If you've found yourself on my page you may be curious about teaching, homeschooling or currently embarking on a journey of unschooling. Wherever you are in this journey welcome and I hope you can enjoy this space of judgement free education tools to support our young people. A little bit about me, I have been a teacher in Australia since 2014, I have taught in custody, specialist schooling for disengaged young people and mainstream schools. I am also a mother of 3 young children and am in my first year of homeschooling my eldest child (primary aged). This wasn't an easy decision and to be honest felt like the unpopular choice but as most homeschoolers know we do not often embark this journey lightly or without reason and for us this was the best option for our child.
Something that has surprised me about the homeschooling community is the amount of resources available for home schooled kids. But with soo many choices comes with it overwhelm. Where to I start, what curriculum should I follow, how much time should be spent on formal schooling each day, how to I create a learning plan etc etc. For my fellow Aus homeschooling parents HEN (Home Education Network) is a great place to start. Here you will find step by step assistance in submitting your application to homeschool and also a plethora of learning programs and resources. I then suggest joining homeschooling Facebook pages in your local areas for notifications of catch ups, classes in the community for homeschoolers and general local updates.
It was these Facebook pages that inspired my creation of this site. What I noticed was parents were incredible overwhelmed with the teaching component of homeschooling. It is heartbreaking reading all of the stories of parents who have embarked on their homeschooling journey for whatever reason but then find themselves left in the nether trying to figure out how and what to teach their children. It is my hope for this page that parents can visit to gain insight into opportunities for learning, resources I have found helpful when homeschooling and guidance and support throughout their journey.
SO happy reading, I'm glad you're here and you're doing amazing.
